Rattler Roundup: Rattlers back in the Snake Pit

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers volleyball teams were back in familiar territory this weekend.

The Rattlers men’s and women’s volleyball teams opened their ACAC seasons with a home-and-home series with the Ambrose Lions. On Friday night in Calgary, the women’s team lost in three straight sets and the men’s team fell three sets to one.

Saturday night the teams returned to the college and the Snake Pit, which opened its doors for the first time since the 2019-20 season after COVID-19 shutdowns and undergoing renovations.

The two teams shared the same results Saturday with the women’s team shut out three sets to zero, and the men’s team falling three sets to one. They have another home-and-home next weekend as they face the SAIT Trojans twice, playing on the road Friday before returning home Saturday.

The Rattlers cross-country teams competed in Calgary at the St. Mary’s Open this weekend.

The women’s team placed second, just one point behind the hosting St. Mary’s squad. Becky Ross and Maddy Scrimger placed second and third respectively, while veterans Cheldynn Molnar and Pyper Gill placed 14th and 16th.

The men’s team finished in fourth, led by Brannon Sumner with a 16th place. Sumner was followed by Jaiden Romaniuk (18th), Gage Smith (20th), Harrison Lawson (24th), Justin Jaeger (26th), Carson Schiller (28th) and Shintaro Iwata (34th).

The Rattlers men’s and women’s basketball teams opened their seasons in Calgary on Friday with games against the SAIT Trojans. The men’s team won their opener 89-86 led by Ethan Robinson’s 29 points, eight rebounds and three assists. The women’s team fell 72-52 with Sheridan George leading the way offensively with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Both the men’s and women’s teams play their home opener this Friday at the Snake Pit against the Trojans.

The Rattlers’ soccer teams closed out their home schedules for the season.

The women’s soccer team fell 2-1 on Saturday to the Augustana Vikings before losing 7-0 to the Red Deer Queens on Sunday. Maisa Rebello had the Rattlers’ only goal on Saturday.

The men’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Red Deer Kings on Sunday, Felix Danquah had the goal.

Both teams finish out their regular seasons on Saturday in Calgary against the Ambrose Lions

The Rattlers golf team is competing at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national championship this week hosted by Durham College in Durham, Ont. The Rattlers have six golfers competing in the tournament which got underway Monday and wraps up Friday. The men’s golf team, Jayden Dudas, Colby Friedrich, Chase Broderson, Matt Taylor, Jonathan Bartman are in action alongside Libby Bourassa, the Rattlers lone women’s golfer competing.
