Ringette Roundup: U16B Matrix win Turkey gold

The U16B Matrix hit the ice and started their ringette season in a big way this weekend, winning gold at the Turkey Ring Tournament in St. Albert.

The Matrix notched three wins in round-robin play to punch a ticket to the gold medal game. All total, the girls outscored their opponents 46-9 over four games.

In game one against the Fort Saskatchewan Ice, the Matrix came out on top 13-1. Jordy Provost led with five goals, three assists. Grace Ammann had two goals and two assists, while Ava Allchurch, Erika Want, Kasey Martin, Ryleigh Jackiw and Alexis Unreiner each tallied a goal in the win.

In game two, the Matrix pulled away in the second period en route to a 10-3 win over the Airdrie Sting. Provost led the way again with two goals and two assists. Jackiw and Tindall each had two goals and an assist, Grace Ammann had a goal and two assists and Allchurch, Want and Bella Henrichs rounded out the scoring with a goal each.

The Matrix won game three 12-2 over the NW Calgary Ambush. Tindall potted four goals and added an assist, while Provost continued to pile up points with three goals and two assists. Heinrichs and Ammann each had a goal and two assists, and Seale, Alexis Unreiner and Kasey Martin all had a goal and three assists.

The team’s dominance carried into the gold-medal game, with the Matrix toppling Calgary 11-3. Tindall again led the offence with three goals and two assists while Provost and Jackiw had two goals each.

Unreiner, Heinrichs, Seale and Karly Stennick rounded out the scoring with a goal and as assist each.

Kyree Stern was between the pipes for the entire tournament.

The Matrix resume action at home on Oct. 23 at the Kinplex for a double-header against the Lethbridge Rattlers. Games start at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

U19

The Medicine Hat U19 Chicken Hawks ringette team also won gold this weekend in St. Albert.

The Chicken Hawks won their first game against Pembina 9-2 before beating St. Albert 8-3. They took their last round-robin game against Sherwood Park by a score of 8-5.

The gold final was a rematch against St. Albert with the Chicken Hawks pulling out the 6-5 win.

The Medicine Hat U19 Chicken Hawks are in action this weekend with two road contests Saturday against Bowview.
