Rattler Roundup: Rattlers women’s soccer nabs first win

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s soccer team picked up their first victory of their ACAC season on Sunday.

After being tied 1-1 at the half against the Ambrose Lions, the Rattlers scored five goals to secure a 6-2 win on their home field. Ana Waurynchuk had both of the Rattlers first-half goals before Victoria Gendron, Arianna Baxter, Madeleine Heese and Maisa Rebello each added a goal of their own in the second half.

Allyssa Heidel had three saves in the win. The Rattlers women’s team entered the contest coming off a 3-0 loss Friday at home to the Lethbridge Kodiaks.

The Rattlers men’s soccer team, who was also coming off a 3-0 Friday loss to Lethbridge, tied the Lions 2-2 Sunday afternoon.

After trailing 1-0 at the half, the Rattlers rattled off two goals in the second from Felix Danquah and Jire Nzeyimana. Ross Wilder had two saves in the net for the Rattlers.

The Rattlers men’s and women’s soccer teams are on the road this weekend as they travel to Olds College Saturday to face the Broncos before heading to SAIT on Sunday to take on the Trojans.

The Rattlers cross-country team was in Edmonton for ACAC Grand Prix 3 on Saturday and the MHC women’s team ran themselves into a second-place finish, only two points behind first-place St. Mary’s University.

The Rattlers women were led by the duo of Becky Ross and Maddy Scrimger ,who placed third and fourth respectively. Cheldynn Molnar (14th), Pyper Gill (19th), Grace Warren (32nd), and Annika Marshall (33rd) also represented the Rattlers in the race. A depleted roster of only four MHC runners contested the men’s 8K race and had a rough day. Collectively, the Rattlers men placed sixth with Brannon Sumner leading the way in 16th place. He was followed by Gage Smith (22nd), Justin Jaeger (31st), and Shintaro Iwata (35th).

Next race for the Rattlers runners is ACAC No. 4 at St Mary’s University on Oct. 15.
