Cubs pickup point in second weekend of action

By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on October 4, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Cubs were able to pick up a point this weekend as they continue to get their HJHL season underway.

The Cubs were on the road all weekend and kicked off the duo of games with a 4-3 shootout loss Saturday night in Coaldale against the Copperheads.

Colby Friedrich opened the scoring for the Cubs with a power play goal 34 seconds into the game. Friedrich added another goal a little under six minutes later to put the Cubs ahead 2-0 early in the first period. Austin Klimosko scored for the Cubs in the second period to put them ahead of the Copperheads 3-1, before Coaldale added goals in the second and third to send the game to extras.

Mark Peddle made 24 saves throughout the game between the pipes for the Cubs, as they could not find the back of the net in the shootout and were held to picking up one point in the loss.

On Sunday the Cubs were in Cochrane facing the Generals and after scoring early, the Hat ultimately fell 7-5.

Klimosko opened the scoring 24 seconds into the game for the Cubs as the two teams traded five goals in the first frame. Jacob Milne had their second goal of the period.

After trailing 3-2 through 20 minutes, Milne, Connor Douglas and Friedrich all scored in a row during the second period to put Medicine Hat ahead 5-3. Cochrane answered back quickly as the Generals scored four unanswered goals across the second and third frames to take the 7-5 win.

Layne Gilroy started for the Cubs and had 33 saves in the loss. The Cubs next action is Friday night at the Kinplex when they host the Strathmore Wheatland Kings for an 8:15 p.m. contest.
