The Medicine Hat Cubs have a building point for the rest of the season.

The Jr. B club’s season got underway at the Kinplex on Saturday and Sunday with a 3-2 loss against the Okotoks Bisons on opening night and a 6-5 overtime loss to the Red Deer Vipers on Sunday.

The Cubs led first on Saturday as Cooper Hilworth got the team on the board and Callan Prosofsky scored a tying goal in the third, before ultimately losing to the Bisons, who beat the Cubs in Game 6 of the HJHL’s quarterfinals last season before winning the league championship.

Kaiden Morin started the game for the Cubs against the Bisons and had 27 saves in the loss.

Medicine Hat jumped ahead early Sunday with goals from Caleb Garrett, Vaughn Strutt, Prosofsky, Levi Schlosser and Owen Wagner. The Cubs led 5-2 early in the third period before the Vipers mounted a comeback and scored the game winner 2:07 into overtime.

Layne Gilroy was between the pipes for Medicine Hat against Red Deer and made 25 saves in the overtime defeat.

The Cubs have the week to practise before heading to Coaldale Saturday for a road contest against the Copper Heads. Their weekend schedule continues into Sunday on the road as they head to Cochrane to face the Generals.

The Cubs’ (0-1-1-0) next home game is Oct. 7 when they host the Strathmore Wheatland Kings at the Kinplex for an 8:15 p.m. contest.
