Rattler Golf wins locally held tournament

The Medicine Hat College Rattlers golf team had a strong showing on their home course.

The men’s golf team finished in first place of the ACAC Golf South Regional tournament held at Desert Blume on Saturday and Sunday. Second place SAIT finished 37 strokes behind the Rattlers. In the men’s individual race, Medicine Hat’s Chase Broderson, finished the tournament with a six-under 138, putting him just ahead of teammate Jayden Dudas, who finished second with a 140. Colby Friedrich finished in fourth, Jonathan Bartman finished tied for sixth, Matt Taylor was tied for eighth, Brady Deboice 10th and Juaeger Friesen in 20th.

In the women’s team event, the SAIT Trojans took first place honours with a two-day team total of 348. The Rattlers snuck past Concordia for second with a two-day score of 405.

MHC’s Libby Bourassa finished in fourth place with Jack Bertram and Amaly Bartman finishing in eighth and ninth. The next golf tournament on the ACAC calendar is the 2022 ACAC Golf Championship hosted by the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder starting Friday.

Rattlers running

The MHC Rattler cross-country team brought medals home from The Jordan Fish Memorial in Calgary last weekend.

MHC runner Becky Ross hit the podium in only her second ACAC XC race, capturing the silver medal in the women’s race. Rattler’s teammate Cheldynn Molnar also took part in the event, placing 12th.

In the men’s 8 km race, second-year runner Brannon Sumner led the way for the locals with a 13th place finish. Four other Rattlers followed including Jaiden Romanuik (16th), Gage Smith (19th), Harrison Lawson (25th), and Carson Schiller (26th). Collectively, MHC finished fourth in the team competition behind Red Deer Poly, SAIT and Lethbridge College.

Next up for the Rattlers runners is the Concordia Open in Edmonton on Oct. 1.

Rattlers soccer

The Rattlers men’s and women’s soccer teams had their home openers this weekend against the SAIT Trojans and Olds College Broncos.

Saturday the Rattlers women’s team lost 10-0 to SAIT. Goaltender Allyssa Heidel had 18 saves in the contest. On Sunday they held Olds College scoreless in the first half before ultimately falling 3-1. Molly Morris scored the Rattlers’ lone goal and Heidel made four saves.

The Rattlers men’s team lost 6-1 to the Trojans Saturday after the women’s game. Igor Savic had the Rattlers’ goal and net minder Ross Wilder made four saves.

On Sunday MHC scored two goals in the first half against Olds College before the Broncos scored twice for a draw. Mizuki Ozawa and Felix Danquah had the Rattlers’ goals with Pilani Siwella and Arlind Musliu assisting on the two goals respectively.

Maksymilian Slaweta made seven saves for MHC in the tie.

The Rattlers men’s and women’s teams head to Red Deer on Saturday to take on the Polytechnic.
