The Hat High Hawks opened their RFC season in a big way Thursday night.

Hat High hosted Brooks at the Methanex Bowl and beat the Buffalos 67-0.

Hawks head coach Quinn Skelton said he was really happy with all the lessons learned from their first two weeks of practice.
“We’ve been working the last two weeks and it’s been tough, tough work,” Skelton said. “Fourteen days of heat, and the boys have been fantastic in helping rebuild this program after our big graduation class last year. I was very excited for the young bloods that we got in here, and the way we executed today was something we’ve worked on.”

The Hawks opened the scoring in the first quarter with a field goal. Jericho LaCasse scored the Hawks first touchdown as he scampered into the end zone for a rushing score. Cole Ricken followed that score up with a receiving touchdown from quarterback Kaeden Buckler to put Hat High up 15-0 over Brooks. A tackle in the end zone capped off the quarter for the Hawks as they led 16-0 heading into the second quarter.

Hat High came into the contest off the heels of a 47-7 loss to Holy Trinity Academy in an exhibition contest Aug. 26. Skelton said that loss was a learning experience.

“Coming out tonight, these guys wanted to play hard and obviously we didn’t play a team like HTA tonight but the boys also needed this to build confidence and to just keep keep going forward,” Skelton said.

The Hawks exploded offensively in the second quarter, with five touchdowns in five different fashions. Owen Steinke scored a punt return touchdown, Cam Stanke recovered a Buffalos fumble for a score, Clark Campbell scored a rushing touchdown and Madox Zadko recovered a blocked punt as the Hawks jumped ahead 53-0 heading into the half.

Campbell said it was great to score in the first RFC game of the season and was happy to see the Hawks bounce back.

“We’ve got a pretty young team and last week was a little bit of a tough game,” Campbell said. “They had a good team in that game but we came back and bounced back for our second game.”

Tucker Briggs opened the scoring for the Hawks in the third quarter with a rushing touchdown. The Hawks ended the third quarter with another score as Christian Mouland scored a rushing touchdown to put the Hawks up 67-0, their final score.

The Hawks are back in action next Friday as they face Lloyd Composite on the road. Campbell said he is excited for the contest.
“We hope to bring the same mentality as we did this game, we know they will be a good team, but we also have to get ready to go,” Campbell said.
Skelton said the Hawks need to continue their momentum from the win into next Friday’s game.

“We cannot sit on any laurels here because Comp is one of the top teams as well,” Skelton said. “They did very well in the provincial tournament and they have great coaching up there in Lloydminster. I know a number of the kids that are on the provincial program out of Lloyd and if we think it’s going to be a cakewalk, we will get our eyes opened next week.”

Vikings, Colts open RFC season with Boksteyn Bowl

The Crescent Heights Vikings and McCoy Colts opened their RFC seasons after the Hawks game Thursday night with the second annual Rick Boksteyn memorial bowl at the Methanex Bowl. That game was not complete by time of press, see Saturday’s News for the results.

Editors note: A previous version of the story stated the Hawks will host Lloyd Comp next Friday. It is a road game.
