Mavericks win big Sunday in Weyburn

The Medicine Hat Mavericks took their loss on Saturday in Weyburn personally.
After losing 12-5 on Saturday to the Beavers, the Mavericks answered back in a big way Sunday, putting up 15 runs to beat Weyburn 15-1.
Outfielder David Dell led the way offensively in the win with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. The Mavericks got on the board early scoring five runs in the first two innings.
A RBI single from centre fielder Braden DeSonia followed up with left fielder Christian Rush scoring from third on an error had them ahead 2-0 in the first frame. Dell picked up two of his RBIs on a single in the second inning. After hitting a triple in the inning, Rush scored on a wild pitch to give the Mavericks their 5-0 lead.
Isaiah Bartels started the game on the mound for the Mavericks and held Weyburn at bay with six strikeouts in four innings pitched while only allowing one hit. Nate Ewing, who started the game at shortstop, moved onto the mound to start the fifth and pitched through the sixth with two strikeouts in his two innings of work to earn the win.
The Mavericks blew the game open in the fifth inning by scoring five runs to double their lead to 10-1 while Weyburn scored one in the bottom of the inning.
Ewing scored on an error to kick off the offence in the fifth that was followed up with a three RBI triple from catcher Zach Stark, who scored on a wild pitch four pitches later.
The Mavericks kept the offence flowing, scoring a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Ewing scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and Dell kicked off the seventh inning with a RBI single that was followed up with a RBI single from Rush. Dell and Rush scored on separate wild pitches in the inning to give Medicine Hat their 15-1 lead.
With a bloated lead the Mavericks rotated through arms on the field to preserve their bullpen for their Monday matchup in Swift Current. Rush pitched the seventh inning with a strikeout before DeSonia made his WCBL pitching debut in the eighth with a strikeout of his own. Medicine Hat product Tory Nelson got on the mound in the ninth for his WCBL pitching debut and he struck out two batters to pick up the win for the Mavericks.
Medicine Hat(17-34) further distance themselves from the Beavers for the final playoff spot in the WCBL’s East division with the win Sunday. They’re back in action Monday for a 7:05 p.m. contest in Swift Current against the 57’s before they return to MedHat Tuesday to host the Lethbridge Bulls at Athletic Park.
