Mavericks split Monday doubleheader in Regina

The Medicine Hat Mavericks and Regina Red Sox went back and forth Monday in double header action.

The Red Sox took the first seven inning contest 8-6 before the Mavericks won the second game to split the evening of baseball 4-2.

Medicine Hat struck first in Game 1 with a first inning solo home run from left fielder Christian Rush. Regina struck early and often in the bottom of the frame, scoring six runs off Mavericks starter Nate Ewing.

Hunter Boylan took over on the mound and worked 3.1 innings with three strikeouts while allowing two runs to help hold Regina at bay.

The Mavericks got back on the board in the third inning on a RBI double from Ranciel Ventura before the shortstop scored himself on an error by the Regina pitcher to cut the Red Sox’s lead to 7-4.

Bryce Libke worked the fifth and sixth innings on the mound for the Mavericks with a strikeout.

Medicine Hat scored twice in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded hit by pitch RBI by second basemen Deon Reese. The Mavericks scored again on a sacrifice hit from centre fielder Braden DeSonia as Medicine Hat drew close before Regina shut the door to retain the 8-6 win.

The Mavericks also struck first in the second game of the double header,  jumping ahead on a RBI single from left fielder David Dell. Regina answered back with two runs in the second and third innings to lead the Mavericks 2-1.

Ethan Bromley started the contest for Medicine Hat and pitched all seven innings for a four strikeout, complete game win.

The Mavericks scored three un-answered in the remaining four innings to take the win. Their offensive run started when Reese scored from first base on an error by the Regina centre fielder before DeSonia knocked in another run with a RBI single.

Medicine Hat added to their lead in the seventh inning on a RBI single from Reese as they held on for the 4-2 victory.

The Mavericks(16-28) are back in Regina Tuesday for the third of four contests against the Red Sox. That contests gets underway at 7:05 p.m.
