Mavs drop Game 1 of double header in Moose Jaw

By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on July 20, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks had a rough welcoming to double-header action Tuesday night.

The Mavericks fell 6-2 in Moose Jaw against the Miller Express in the first of their two, seven-inning contests on the night. The second game was not complete by press time, visit medicinehatnews.com/sports for a full game story.

Moose Jaw opened the scoring with a four-run first inning to jump ahead early on Mavericks starter Garrett Nicholson. The 23-year-old pitched all six innings, picking up four strikeouts in the process.

Medicine Hat got on the board in the fourth and fifth innings as the two clubs traded runs.

Second baseman Kellen Williamson hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his second of the year, for the Mavs first run. Williamson’s first home run of the season also came against the Miller Express on June 14th. Both home runs came off Moose Jaw pitcher Kellan Voggesser.

The Miller Express answered back in the fourth with a run. Mavs centre fielder Braden DeSonia had an RBI single in the fifth that was followed up with another Moose Jaw run.

After the back-and-forth run, the Miller Express held on for the win to open the evening.

The Mavericks came into Tuesday’s contest off a rained out game in Regina Monday against the Red Sox. That game was rescheduled for July 25.

Medicine Hat’s next home game is tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Athletic Park against Moose Jaw.
