Mavericks drop second game of double header

By James Tubb on July 19, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks were in tough Tuesday in Moose Jaw.

After dropping the first seven inning game of their double header against the Miller Express 6-2, the Mavericks fell 10-5 in the second game of the day.

Moose Jaw was on the board early as they scored six runs in the first four innings to jump ahead 6-0. Mavericks reliever Bryce Libke started the contest and pitched 3.1 innings with two strikeouts. Christian Rush made his Mavericks pitching debut and worked an inning out of the bullpen.

The Mavericks cracked the scoreboard in the fifth inning on a RBI sacrifice fly to centre field from centre fielder Braden DeSonia. One pitch later Mavericks first basemen Andrew Savage scored another run with a sacrifice hit to the second basemen to bring the Mavericks within two, trailing 4-2.

The Miller Express opened the offensive floodgates in the fifth scoring four runs to increase their lead to 10-2. Medicine Hat answered back in the sixth inning with a three run home run from right fielder David Dell that cut Moose Jaws lead in half. The Miller Express held onto that lead as they took the shortened, double header contest 10-5.

The Mavericks(15-26) are back in action Wednesday when they host Moose Jaw for a 7:05 p.m. contest at Athletic Park. That contest will have the World Series trophy in attendance as Mike Frostad, who won the World Series with the Atlanta Braves as a trainer in 2021.
