Pitching leads Mavericks over Regina on Sunday

By James Tubb on July 17, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks were in control Sunday afternoon in Regina.

Medicine Hat held the Red Sox to one run as the Mavericks put together a 4-1 win at Currie Field. The win comes on the heels of a 6-4 loss Saturday night in Weyburn against the Beavers.

The Mavericks were led Sunday by the pitching performance of starter Zac Robinson, who held the Red Sox to five hits and one run with a strikeout in seven innings of work.

Medicine Hat struck first offensively in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from third basemen Tory Nelson to right field that scored second basemen Kellen Williamson from third. Regina scored their lone run in the bottom of the second frame to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Mavericks retook their lead in the third inning on a two RBI double from first basemen Andrew Savage to put them ahead 3-1. Savage led the Mavericks offensively in Sunday’s win with two RBI’s on three hits and a walk. The Mavericks lead remained as Robinson mowed through the Red Sox lineup, allowing only one hit from the third to seventh inning.

Medicine Hat added to their lead in the top of the seventh as centre fielder Braden DeSonia singled to left field and promptly stole second and third base on the next two pitches thrown. While stealing third, the Red Sox catcher had an errant throw that allowed DeSonia to score and push the Mavericks lead to 4-1.

Hunter Boylan took over on the mound to start the eighth and he stranded two runners on the corners with a strikeout. Jack Suhai worked the ninth inning in the most efficient way  he could, getting the three outs he needed on three pitches to take the 4-1 win.

The Mavericks(15-24) are back in Regina Monday for a 7:05 p.m. rematch with the Red Sox.
