The Medicine Hat Mavericks almost came all the way back Saturday night. After falling behind 5-0 in the third inning, the Mavericks scored four runs but could not scrape across anymore as they lost 6-4 to the Weyburn Beavers at Tom Laing Park. Medicine Hat came into the road contest on a high after beating the Swift Current 57’s 10-9 Friday night. The Beavers struck offensively first Saturday with their five run third inning off of Mavericks starter Ethan Bromley. The Calgary product was lifted after the third frame with four strikeouts in the start. Kam Richards took over on the mound in the fourth and worked three innings for the Mavericks with four strikeouts while only allowing two hits. The Mavericks got on the board in the fifth inning on a bases loaded walk by right fielder David Dell. Two pitches later, centre fielder Braden DeSonia drove in another run with a sacrifice hit in the infield to bring Medicine Hat within 5-2. DeSonia drove in the Mavericks third run in the eighth inning with another infield sacrifice hit. Bryce Libke took over on the mound in the seventh and worked a clean inning. He started the bottom of the eighth for the Mavericks and picked up two strikeouts while allowing one run to score. Medicine Hat started their comeback efforts in the ninth with a pinch hit, RBI single from Tory Nelson that brought them within two. But that was all the offence they could muster as the Beavers held on for the 6-4 win. The Mavericks(14-24) are back in action Sunday in Regina for a 2:05 p.m. contest against the Red Sox. 11
