jtubb@medicinehatnews.com@ReporterTubb The Medicine Hat Mavericks found themselves one run short all weekend long. The Mavs opened their six-day road trip with a 5-3 walk-off loss Friday night in Sylvan Lake against the Gulls. After tying the game in the top of the ninth at 3-3, the Mavericks fell 5-3 to the Sylvan Lake Gulls on a walk-off home run. Medicine Hat was in complete control of the game, leading 2-0 through six-and-a-half innings, and starting pitcher Gerrit Erickson was turning aside every Gulls hitter he faced and had a no-hitter going with eight strikeouts before allowing a two-run home run in the seventh to tie the game 2-2. The Mavericks were in Fort McMurray on Saturday and lost in more ninth inning dramatics. The Mavs drew even with the Giants in the top of the ninth before falling 4-3 in the bottom of the frame on a bases-loaded walk. Tory Nelson had hit a two-run home run in the ninth for the tie, his first WCBL home run, before the Giants pulled out the win. Sunday the Mavs faced the Giants again and lost 7-6. Pitcher Gerrit Erickson started the game at first base and picked up his first hit with an RBI double in the eighth inning of the loss. The Mavericks were back in Sylvan Lake on Monday taking on the Gulls. That game was not over by press time, visit medicinehatnews.com/sports for a full story on the game.
