Mavericks fall 7-4 Monday night in Sylvan lake

By James Tubb on July 11, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks could not complete the comeback Monday night.

Medicine Hat scored four runs in the eighth inning with a grand slam from centre fielder Braden DeSonia to cut Sylvan Lake’s lead to 7-4 but that was all the offence they could muster as the Gulls held on for the 7-4 win.

The loss, the Mavericks fourth in a row, caps off a stretch of seven games in seven days including four straight on the road.

Medicine Hat pitcher Hunter Cooper started the contest on the mound and worked three innings before allowing a run in the fourth. He started the bottom of the fifth but his day was done after the Gulls scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead. Cooper had one strikeouts in his start and was charged with six runs against with two scoring after he was out of the game.

Hunter Boylan took over on the mound in the fifth and worked two innings with three strikeouts and only one run allowed as he held the Gulls to 7-0.

The Mavericks were kept at bay by Sylvan Lake starting pitcher Josh Tucker, who registered 12 strikeouts in his seven innings of work and held them hitless until the sixth inning.

Medicine Hat product Nathan Stark took over on the mound for the Mavericks in the seventh inning and he worked two hitless innings with two strikeouts to hold the Gulls off the board.

Medicine Hat finally cracked the scoreboard in the eighth inning when DeSonia stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. He yanked the ball over the right field fence for the grand slam, his fifth home run of the season, as the Mavericks gained momentum with the Gulls lead cut to 7-4.

The Mavericks challenged in the ninth inning with a leadoff hit from shortstop Nate Ade but they were not able to mount any offence beyond that as Sylvan Lake held on for the 7-4 win.

Medicine Hat(12-22) is off Tuesday before they head to Swift Current to take on the 57’s Wednesday. The Mavericks are back in Medicine Hat on Thursday for a 7:05 p.m. rematch with Swift Current at Athletic Park.
