Mavericks lose in walk-off fashion Friday

By James Tubb on July 8, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks lost in dramatic fashion Friday night.

After tying the game in the top of the ninth at 3-3, the Mavericks fell 5-3 to the Sylvan Lake Gulls on a walk-off home run.

The Mavs got on the board first, scoring two runs in the third inning on a sacrifice hit from right fielder Kellen Williamson and a RBI single from centre fielder Braden DeSonia. Medicine Hat was in complete control of the game as they led 2-0 through six and a half innings and starting pitcher Gerrit Erickson was turning aside every Gulls hitter he faced.

Erickson was no hitting Sylvan Lake with eight strikeouts before allowing a two run home run in the seventh that tied the game at 2-2. He finished the seventh inning with the home run being the lone hit he allowed.

Kam Richards took over on the mound in the eighth and recorded an out before two Gulls got on base, bringing Nate Ewing into the game to pitch.

Ewing recorded a five out save Thursday night to secure the Mavericks 6-5 win over the Regina Red Sox at Athletic Park. The first Sylvan Lake batter he faced squeaked a double through the right side of the diamond to score the runner from second to give the Gulls the 3-2 lead.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Nate Ade dropped a single into short right field bringing pinch hitter Austin Cappas to the plate. Cappas hit a deep drive to centre field that bounced off the wall and scored Ade from first to tie the game up at 3-3.

Mavericks head coach Tyler Jeske was ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes after third basemen Tory Nelson struck out in the ninth inning.

Ewing remained on the mound for the bottom of the ninth and recorded an out before walking a batter and giving up the walk-off home run one pitch later.

The Mavericks(12-19) are back in action Saturday night in Fort McMurray for the second game of their six day road trip. That game against the Giants gets underway at 7:05 p.m.
