Mavs pick up winning weekend in Weyburn

By James Tubb on July 5, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks ended their weekend on a high note.

After dropping three straight contests last week, including a 2-0 shutout loss to the Swift Current 57’s on Canada Day at Athletic Park, the Mavericks won both weekend games in Weyburn against the Beavers.

Saturday night the Mavericks scored four runs in the first inning and held on for the 6-5 win.

Shortstop Nate Ade and right fielder David Dell led the way offensively in Saturday’s win. Both had two hits, a run scored and Ade added a RBI to his night.

Keon Burkholder started the contest for the Mavs and worked four and a third innings with five strikeouts. Ethan Bromley pitched two and a third innings before Isaiah Bartels took the ball for an inning and a third. Bartels was credited with the win. Nate Ewing started the game at third base and pitched in the ninth inning, picking up the save, his first of the season, with the Beavers having the bases loaded.

In Sunday’s win the Mavericks flexed their offensive muscles. They led 13-6 after seven innings before the Beavers added four runs in the eighth to make it interesting.

Centre fielder Braden DeSonia was the offensive leader, putting up three hits, two RBIs and scoring three times.

Hunter Cooper was the starter and picked up the win with five innings pitched and three strikeouts. Bryce Libke worked the sixth and Jack Suhai pitched the seventh and eighth innings. Again Ewing got on the mound in the ninth and shut the door securing the Medicine Hat win.

The Mavericks exit the weekend in fourth place of the East Divison with a record of 11-16. They were off Monday with their next action coming tonight when they host the Regina Red Sox for the first game of a three contest set, all at Athletic Park, and a stretch of seven games in seven nights.
