Jesse Florkowski is excited to get back to championship action.
The 32-year-old is off to Shelton, Wash., just outside of Seattle, to compete in the North American one-armed golfer championship starting Monday. He said he wasn’t able to play last year due to COVID-19 but is looking forward to the competition again.
“It’s about time that we’ve had some nice weather and I’ve been practicing and playing as much as I can,” Florkowski said. “Hopefully the golf game kind of takes off and comes with me to Seattle.”
Florkowski has had success at the tournament in the past, winning six of the last seven years. Monday and Tuesday he will play 18 holes each with the 75 other golfers in attendance for the qualifying rounds. The top eight will then play 18 on Wednesday and Thursday morning with the finals that afternoon, totalling five rounds of 18 in four days for the golfers who make it to the finals.
After that tournament, Florkowski has a couple weeks before he heads to Pinehurst to compete in the Adaptive Open held by the United States Golf Association on July 18.
Pinehurst, located in North Carolina, has hosted a number of prestigious golf tournaments including three U.S. Open Championships, one U.S. Women’s Open, three U.S. Amateur Championships, one PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. Florkowski said he’ll be a little nervous but is looking forward to playing at that course.
“That will be the biggest tournament I’ve ever played at,” Florkowski said. “I’m sure I’ll be nervous on the first tee but as soon as the tournament kind of gets going, I’ll probably settle in and hopefully play well enough to bring the trophy back to Medicine Hat.”
