By James Tubb on June 14, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks had a slow start Tuesday night.

The Mavericks allowed eight runs in the first five innings and ultimately lost 8-5 in Moose Jaw against the Miller Express.

Hunter Cooper took the decision on the mound with two strikeouts in three innings pitched, giving up six runs allowed on six hits. Kameron Richards took over on the bump in the fourth and threw four innings with one strikeout, five hits and two runs against.

Kellan Williamson got the Mavericks on the board in the top of the third inning with a solo home run, his first of the season.

The Mavericks entered Tuesday’s contest coming off an off-day Monday following an 12-5 loss to the Edmonton Prospects at Athletic Park Sunday.

Medicine Hat product Nathan Stark took over on the mound in the eighth inning and kept Moose Jaw off the base paths with one strikeout.

The Mavericks made it interesting late with a sac RBI hit from left fielder Austin Cappas in the top of the eighth. Short stop Adrian Salazar knocked in two in the ninth with a RBI double and third baseman Nathan Ade had an RBI single to bring the Mavericks within three.

Medicine Hat(5-8) could not complete the comeback as Moose Jaw held onto their 8-5 lead for the win. The Mavericks are back in action Wednesday for a rematch against Moose Jaw. They return to Athletic Park Thursday when they host the Lethbridge Bulls.
