Heller captures city singles tennis open tournament

Medicine Hat Tennis Club opened the summer season with the city singles tournament this weekend.

The tennis club stretched its legs to start the season with the four-day tournament that featured 24 players, 18 men and six women competing for a singles championship.

Calvin Heller took the Men’s Open by defeating Mason Heller 6-0, 6-3. Todd Regehr won the Men’s Open consolation over Mak Howes 6-4, 7-5.

The Women’s Open went the distance but was won by Kristen Wenzel who defeated Dawn Olson 6-4, 1-6, 7-6.

Sandy McIntosh won the Women’s Open consolation by defeating CoraLee Riehl 6-3, 6-4.

Alex Stevens won the Men’s Intermediate by downing David Schnare 6-2, 6-0. Mike Fentabil was the Men’s Intermediate champ after defeating Mike Dykstra 6-3, 6-2.

The next event at the Tennis Club is the Tim Hortons Junior Open Singles Tournament Saturday.
