Mavericks almost comeback, fall 10-7 Friday

By James Tubb on June 3, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks almost clawed their way back Friday night at Athletic Park.

The Mavericks were down 10-3 after five innings against the Moose Jaw Miller Express and made it interesting with four runs combined in the eighth and ninth but ultimately fell 10-7. The Mavericks find themselves in a rut after starting the season 3-0. Their loss Friday marks their third in a row after being walked off 9-8 in Brooks against the Bombers on Thursday.

Nathan Ade and Kellan Williamson led the Mavericks offensively with three hits and a run scored each. The second basemen Williamson and first basemen Hunter Boylan both had two RBIs in Friday’s loss.

Gerrit Erickson picked up the loss on the mound with an inning and a third work. Medicine Hat product Jack Suhai came out of the bullpen and threw three and a third innings, picking up one strikeout.

After Moose Jaw scored three runs in the top of the first, the Mavericks answered back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Williamson.

Moose Jaw added three more runs in the top of the second and Medicine Hat returned with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth, when Ade scored after an error from the Miller Express second basemen.

The Mavericks scored in the bottom of the fifth after an error by the shortstop allowed Williamson to make it home.

Hunter Cooper was the third arm out of the ‘pen and shut down Moose Jaw in his three and a third innings work while notching four strikeouts.

Boylan hit his team leading second home run of the season in the eighth inning to keep the momentum alive for the 1,335 fans in attendance at Athletic Park.

Nathaniel Ewing, who joined the club Thursday, worked the ninth inning on the mound and struck out the first batter he faced.

In the bottom of the ninth the Mavericks made it interesting, driving in three runs on three hits. Williamson hit a sac fly to drive in the first, catcher Deon Reese scored on a fielders choice play and Ade drove in centre fielder Braden Desonia for their third run. The Mavericks couldn’t plate anymore runners as Moose Jaw held on for the win.

The Mavericks are back in action Saturday for the second game of their two contest set against Moose Jaw before they hit the road for Swift Current Sunday.

Saturday’s game at Athletic Park gets underway at 7:05 p.m.
