Mavericks fall in six run walk-off ninth for Brooks

By James Tubb on June 2, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Mavericks witnessed a walk-off win Thursday night, only it wasn’t their own.

The Mavericks led the Brooks Bombers 8-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth and ended up losing 9-8 . The loss comes two days after the Mavericks fell 6-4 in the 10th inning at Athletic Park against the Okotoks Dawgs.

Medicine Hat got on the board first with an RBI single from right fielder Braden Desonia in the first inning. Desonia was one of four Mavericks, including shortstop Adrian Salazar, designated hitter Kellan Williamson and second basemen Tory Nelson to register two hits in the road loss.

Hunter Boylan started the game on the bump and put up four strikeouts in three innings of work. Bryce Libke worked three innings in relief  before Jacob Prosch took over on the mound and threw an inning and a third with two strikeouts.

After Brooks picked up two runs in the bottom of the second the Mavericks slowly built their lead. Salazar drove in a run in the third, Nelson had an RBI single in the fourth and Desonia scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.

The Mavericks appeared to cement their lead with a four run ninth inning with Williamson, Desonia driving in one run each and left fielder Austin Cappas knocking in a pair.

Kameron Richards started the ninth inning for Medicine Hat and he allowed four runs before turning the ball over to Hunter Cooper who picked up the loss after giving up the winning hit.

The Mavericks(3-2) are back in action Friday when they host the Moose Jaw Miller Express for the first of a two game home set at Athletic park. That game gets underway at 7:05 p.m.
