The Medicine Hat Mavericks haven’t missed a beat since their last game in 2019. The WCBL club won their first game of the 2022 season Friday, beating the Moose Jaw Miller Express 3-2 on the road. Gerrit Erickson picked up the win on the mound going five innings while striking out two and only allowing two hits. The Mavericks scored two of their three runs in the second inning when left fielder Braden Desonia hit a double that scored designated hitter Kristoff Swanson on an error by the Moose Jaw shortstop. Their second run came from second basemen Kellan Williamson’s single that knocked in Desonia. The game remained at 2-0 until the eighth inning when the Mavs struck again. Right fielder Hunter Boylan hit a single to drive in third basemen Nathan Ade. Isaiah Bartels came in relief and threw four innings. He struck out five batters before the game got interesting. The Miller express hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning before Bartels slammed the door shut. Friday’s win marks the first in Mavericks head coach Tyler Jeske’s managerial career. The Mavericks next action is Saturday in Moose Jaw at 7:05 p.m. before returning to Athletic Park Sunday for their home opener, also against the Miller Express. That contest gets started at 2:05 p.m. 9
