Ryan Hodgins had a pretty strong freshman year at Simon Fraser University. The Monsignor McCoy alumni was named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Conference first team on Thursday for his play at SFU this season. Hodgins graduated from McCoy in 2020 and joined the Simon Fraser golf team that fall, which competes at the NCAA Division II level. The school did not compete during the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19. Hodgins is fourth in the GNAC for stroke average at 73. He had four top-7 placings this season and tied for second at The Joust at Goose Creek, a tournament hosted by NCAA D1 school California Baptist in February. He tied for seventh at the conference tournament. Hodgins’ teammate at SFU, Bailey Bjornson from Surrey, was named to the all-conference first team as well as freshman of the year. SFU head coach Matthew Steinbach said in a press release both golfers had strong freshman seasons. “Both Bailey and Ryan Hodgins had great freshman seasons, and really either of them could have taken home freshman of the year,” said Steinbach. “It’s a little bit tougher for true freshmen to step up and have an immediate impact on the men’s side.” 7
