Hawks claim provincial wrestling banner

By Medicine Hat News on March 29, 2022.

The Hat High Hawks are 4A provincial wrestling champions after a commanding performance at the Alberta Schools Athletic Association championships in Edmonton earlier this month.

Kiana Ivey and Dylan Callan both left the mat with a gold medal around their neck after winning the 65-kilogram female division and the 108-kg male division, respectively.

Ivey defeated Fielder Bishop of Whitecourt’s St. Joseph for gold, while Callan bested Wetaskiwin’s John Manns in his final match.

Ivey and Callan were joined by four fellow Hawks on the podium, as Aayden Callan (90-kg male, Francisco Candau (47-kg male) and Kimberly Maine (61-kg female) each took home silver medals, while Nathan MacKinnon picked up a bronze medal in the 59-kg male division.

Fifteen of Hat High’s 17 athletes in action at the event scored team points for the Hawks, helping them clinch the 4A title with 35 points – three clear of Sir Winston Churchill for the banner.
