Ringette Roundup: U12 Surge win consolation finals

The Medicine Hat Surge hosted the U12B Regional Championships and nine teams from the Chinook League this weekend and capped it off with a win in the consolation final.

The Surge took on the Indus Lightning Friday and fell 4-3 in their first game. Sloane Berstad had all three Surge goals. Addison Mastel, Lacey Gibney and Jill Stodalka each chipped in with an assist.

They faced South Calgary Fast n’ Furious in Game 2 and won 10-8. Berstad again led the Surge scoring with six goals and added an assist as well. Rounding out the scoring was Breanna Lanuk with a pair. Lacey Gibney and Brea Butterfield also added singles. Single assists went to Lanuk, Butterfield, Gibney and Ally Martin. Eden Schmunk also chipped in with a pair of assists.

Saturday morning featured an early game in Irvine for the Surge, and Calgary’s Northwest Venom proved too much for them, losing 7-2. Gibney and Berstad provided the Medicine Hat goals and Berstad also picked up an assist.

Saturday afternoon’s game was a back-and-forth game against the South Calgary Ice Wolves, but the Surge came up short in the 10-9 battle. Goals for the Surge came from Gibney, scoring a hat trick, Lanuk and Berstad scoring two each and Addison Mastel adding one. Assists came from Berstad with three and Madison Helgeson, Jacqueline Leblanc, Brea Butterfield and Tia Van Maarion with one each.

The duo of Sophia Smith and Emma Pinnell split responsibilities in goal in all of the Surge’s round robin contests.

In the consolation final against the Foothills Phantoms Surge trailed 4-3 at the half but pulled out a 10-8 win.

Leading the scoring for the Surge was Berstad with four goals and an assist. Lanuk helped the winning cause with a pair of goals. Gibney had a four-point game with two goals and two helpers, Addison Mastel chipped in with a goal and an assist and Eden Schmunk rounded out the scoring for the Surge. Brea Butterfield contributed a pair of assists to the cause. Madison Helgeson and Sophie Hanchar each added an assist.

Smith stopped all but four shots she faced in the first half and with the Surge jumping ahead with under four minutes to play. Pinnell was called upon to stand tall and hold down the fort to ensure a Surge win between he pipes.

U16

The Medicine Hat Goal Diggers were in Westlock this weekend participating in provincials, taking on the 12 best teams in Alberta.

Through the round robin the Goal Diggers went 4-0 securing the 1st seed.

In Friday’s action they took on Edmonton Evolution and won 10-4. Rileigh Tabor had a goal and assist and Rylin Lehr had two assists. Pacie Harper, Jordan Weisgerber and Hanna Thompson each had two goals.

In the second game, the Hat took on Rockyford Ringers and won 7-4. Harper, Thompson and Mackenzie Tindall all had four-point outings.

On Saturday the Goal Diggers took on the Calgary Whiplash and Calgary Ballistic defeating them both by scores of 8-2 and 5-3, respectively.

Tindall and Thompson led the team with three points each in the first game and Grace Ammann had three points while Jordan Weisgerber, Alexis Unreiner and Sophie Kerr had two points each.

In Sunday’s semi final game, Medicine Hat matched up against the Lethbridge Rattlers and lost 7-2 dropping them to the bronze medal game.

Brooklyn Schlenker and Sophie Kerr each scored in the loss.

In the bronze medal match, the Goal Diggers faced the Lacombe Edge and came out with a 6-2 win. Sophie Kerr led the way with Bella Heinrichs, Jordan Weisgerber and Hanna Thompson all chipping in with two points. Kyree Stern-Rebmann was in net for all six games, going 5-1 over the weekend.

U19

The U19B Mavens secured their spot at provincials with a 6-4 win Saturday in Airdrie against the Calgary Bowview Vipers.

Nolan Reid and Leah Mason led the Mavens offence with two goals each as Kylee Waldegger and Raynah Gibney rounded out the goals with one apiece. Their next contest is this weekend back in Airdrie for the provincial championships.
