Ringette Roundup: U19A Gators clinch spot in provincial championship

The Medicine Hat Gators ringette team played in two provincial playdown games in Calgary Saturday and secured their spot to play in the Alberta U19A Championship.

The Gators lost their first game on Saturday, 5-3 against the Bowview Iron Maidens, who were the top-ranked team in their playoff pool.

Scoring for the Gators was Kylie Kallenberger, Dimitria Karamanos and Amanda Robinson.

The Gators needed a tie or a win in their second game to secure a spot and they pulled out a 6-6 tie after being down 6-4 with a minute left in the game.

Sydney Anderson scored with 12 seconds left to put the Gators within one before Bree Becker passed the ring to Marin Sinclair who scored with only 1.2 seconds on the clock to secure the needed point.

Other scorers in the game were Joren Gramlich, Preslee Starner, Grace Carrier and Robinson.

Rheagyn Heinrichs was in net for both games. The Gators next action is the provincial championships that take place Mar. 4-6 in Calgary.

U16

The U16 Goal Diggers were in Calgary for the weekend, taking on the NW Carnage. On Saturday, they dropped their last two league games by scores of 9-6 and 6-4.

On Sunday, the Goal Diggers faced the Carnage in their first playdown games and beat them 8-4. Hannah Thompson and Pacie Harper led the Goal Diggers offensively with three goals each. Sophie Kerr opened the scoring with a goal in the first two minutes of the game.

Kyree Stern-Redmann picked up the win in net.

The next action for the Goal Diggers is this weekend when they continue playdown action in Rockyford for two games against Airdrie and Bowview.

U12

The U12B Surge headed to Calgary this weekend for a doubleheader with the Northwest Venom. The Surge lost their first game 14-3. Scoring for the Surge was Sloane Berstad with a pair while Breanna Lanuk added a single. Eden Schmunk contributed with a pair of assists and Ally Martin and Addison Mastel also added assists on the Surge goals. Handling the goaltending duties for that loss was Sophia Smith.

After a short break, the Surge looked to avenge the earlier loss and came out strong but fell 8-5 to the Venom.

Leading the scoring for the Surge was Berstad with four goals. Brea Butterfield, Martin, Lacey Gibney and Sophie Hanchar also added a goal each. Tia Van Maarion had a pair of assists while Schmunk, Lanuk and Lacey Gibney added an assist each. Between the pipes for the second game was Emma Pinnell.

Next action for the Surge is a doubleheader at home on Mar. 5 with the Lethbridge Rattlers to finish off their regular season play in the Chinook League.
