Cubs split weekend series on the road

By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on January 18, 2022.

The Medicine Hat Cubs split their games this past weekend with a 8-1 win in Kainai Saturday and an 5-4 overtime loss in Strathmore Sunday.

Saturday night against the Junior Braves, Conner Douglas and Callen Prosofsky opened the scoring for the Cubs and gave them a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Cooper Hilworth scored in the second period and Douglas added his second of the contest to give the Cubs a 4-0 advantage heading into the third period.

The Cubs exploded offensively in the third with Conner Miller, Gerret Harty, Levi Schlosser and Ethan Machan each notching a goal.

Harty’s goal was his first as a Cub since joining the team to start the new year.

With only 2:12 left in the game, Kainai scored and broke Layne Gilroy’s shutout.

He stopped 22 shots to pick up the win.

In Saturday’s close affair, Strathmore opened the scoring 1:04 into the contest. Prosofsky tied it up before the Wheatland Kings scored two more. Harty scored to bring the Cubs with one after 20.

There was no offence in the second period. Schlosser tied the game up 14 seconds into the third. Strathmore scored once again in the third before Colby Friedrich scored to tie the game with only 3:19 left.

Strathmore picked up the OT win with a power play goal.

Dawsen Savage was in net for the loss with 26 saves.

The Cubs have five more games on their schedule before they hit the playoffs.

They still sit second in the South Division with a record of 22-6-3 and are eight points up on the third-place Coaldale Copperheads.

They are back in action on Thursday to take on the Coaldale for a 8:15 p.m. contest at the Kinplex.

They are at home again on Sunday when they face off against the first-place team in the South Division, the Okotoks Bisons. That game gets underway at 2:45 p.m.
