Cubs take two game sweep into 2022

By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on December 21, 2021.

The Medicine Hat Cubs won both their games last weekend to hit the Holiday break on a high note. After those wins, the Cubs sit in second place of the south division in the HJHL with a record of 18-6-2.

Saturday the Cubs took on the Three Hill Trashers and shut them out in a 6-0 win.

Dawsen Savage picked up the shutout between the pipes as he turned aside all 20 shots he faced.

Callen Prosofsky got the Cubs on the board late in the first period for his 10th goal on the season.

Ethan Machan and Levi Schlosser both scored in the last five minutes of the second period to extend the Cubs lead to 3-0 heading into the final frame. Conner Miller scored his 18th of the season early in the first to open the flood gates for Medicine Hat. Colby Friedrich and Conner Douglas each added goals in the third to give the Cubs their final 6-0 score.

On Sunday the Cubs had another shutout win as they beat the Coaldale Copperheads 4-0.

The game was scoreless after the first period. The Cubs fans in attendance went without a goal until over halfway through the second when Machan scored on a power play, his second goal of the weekend and 18th of the season. Colby Friedrich added another man advantage marker for the cubs less than four minutes later to put them ahead 2-0 after 40 minutes.

Friedrich wasn’t done for the night as he scored his second of the game in first two minutes of the third frame to increase the Cubs lead.

The 20-year-old Friedrich sent hats flying after notching his third goal of the game with an empty netter with 1:42 left in the game to give the Cubs the 4-0 win.

Savage picked up his second shutout of the weekend in the win as he stopped all 26 shots he faced for his eighth win on the season.

The Medicine Hat Cubs are on Christmas break until Jan. 7., when they host the Kainai Junior Braves. Puck drop for that game is 6:45 p.m. at the Kinplex. The next day, Jan. 8., the Cubs host the Strathmore Wheatland Kings. That game gets underway at 8:15pm.
