The Hat High Hawks senior girls basketball team showed up to play Thursday night.
The squad won 84-30 against the Crescent Heights Vikings senior girls team in the first game of the Hawks three-day Green and White Invitational tournament.
Hat High head coach Jeff Harrold said post-game the girls carried momentum from their last league win into Thursday’s contest.
“We dug ourselves a bit of a hole the other night but we came back and we grinded it out and got a ‘W’ and I think that momentum carried us into this game,” Harrold said.
Hat High jumped out to an early lead that carried throughout the game, holding a 54-16 lead at the half.
The Hawks were led by Hayley Heidinger who had 17 points in three quarters of play.
Crescent Heights head coach Dragana Vukovic said she didn’t think her team played as well as they could have, but added it’s a learning experience for the Vikings.
“I think there is a lot of character building here, pressure exposes the character and I think for the parts we didn’t really show the greatest attitude,” Vukovic said. “So, there is definitely growth and improvement to be accomplished after this.”
The Vikings were led offensively by Kelsey Mann who had 16 points, with 12 coming from beyond the three point line.
After winning Thursday night, the Hawks varsity girls team’s next game is Saturday at 10:15 a.m.. They’ll take on the winner of LCI and Foothills’ game Friday afternoon.
Harrold said his team needs to just focus on themselves if they want to win their own tournament.
“We just have to get better at our systems and us really,” Harrold said. “Every opportunity we get to play from here on out is an opportunity to get better. So we’re just focused on us right now.”
The Vikings will take on the loser of the LCI vs. Foothills’ game on Friday night at 8:15 p.m.
Hat High’s senior boys basketball team also played Thursday night, against the Hawks JV team, but a result was not available by press time.
The winner of that game’s next match will be Saturday at 12 a.m. with the losing team playing Friday night at 8:15 p.m.
