By MEDICINE HAT NEWS on December 15, 2021.

The Medicine Hat Cubs split a pair of games at home over the weekend, blanking the Kainai Junior Braves 8-0 Saturday before falling 5-2 to the Okotoks Bisons Sunday.

Cooper Hilworth led the pack offensively on Saturday with three goals and three assists in the win. Ethan Machan had a goal and three assists, Colbrey Friedrich had a goal and two assists, Connor Miller had a goal and an assist and both Everet Stewart and Jacob Milne added a goal each.

Medicine Hat outshot the Junior Braves 48-14.

Layne Gilroy was between the pipes for the Cubs and stopped all 14 shots on route to the win.

Okotoks opened Sunday’s scoring 1:54 into the first period. The Cubs answered back 10 minutes later, as Hillworth scored to tie the game up heading into the second period.

The league-best Bisons scored two more goals in the second. With 32 seconds left in the frame, Austin Klimosko scored to keep the Cubs in the game. Klimosko’s third goal of the year was not enough to spark the Cubs however, as Okotoks scored two more goals in the third, including an empty-net goal to win the game.

The Bisons outshot the Cubs 32-23. Dawsen Savage was in net for the Cubs and took the loss with 27 saves.

The weekend puts the Cubs at 16-6-2 on the Heritage Junior Hockey League season, while Okotoks sits at 23-2-1 and the Braves are at 5-21-0.

The Cubs are back in action this weekend with two games on the docket. They travel to Three Hills on Saturday to take on the Thrashers (5-18-1) for the first time this season. On Sunday, they face off at the Kinplex against the rival Coaldale Copperheads (16-7-2) at 6 p.m.
