Warriors forward Brayden Yager scored with eight seconds left in overtime to prevent the Medicine Hat Tigers from completing a late comeback with a 4-3 victory on Friday night in Moose Jaw.

The hometown Warriors opened the scoring with a power play goal from Ryder Korczak 7:33 into the first period. Atley Calvert and Jagger Firkus assisted on Korczak’s fifth of the year on the man advantage.

Medicine Hat would answer back a little more than 10 minutes later as Corson Hopwo capitalized on a short handed opportunity to tie the game up at 1-1 with 1:46 left in the frame. Lukas Svejkovksy picked up the helper on Hopwo’s fourth.

Medicine Hat led the period in shots, 13-9.

Defenceman Daniel Baker picked up where the Tigers left off in the first period with a power play goal only 1:16 into the second frame. Tyler MacKenzie and Svejkovsky picked up the assists on Baker’s second of the season. The assist gave Svejkovsky 18 points through the Tigers’ first nine games of this early season.

The Warriors didn’t let Medicine Hat end the second period with the lead though, as Eric Alarie tied the game up at 2-2 with 2:12 left in the frame. Moose Jaw led the period in shots, 14-6.

Medicine Hat and Moose Jaw traded chances throughout the third period with neither team scoring through 14 minutes before the Warriors took a late lead.

Denton Mateychuk scored his third goal of the season for the Warriors to put them ahead 3-2 with 6:02 left in the third.

But Noah Danielson scored late for the Tigers, tying the game back up with 1:30 left in the last period. Bogdans Hodass and Svejkovsky picked up the assists on Danielson’s fourth of the season to force OT.

Garin Bjorklund stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced for the Tigers. Between the pipes for the Warriors, Carl Tetachuk turned 28 of the 31 Tigers shots he saw.

Medicine Hat’s record now sits at 4-5-0-1 on the year, with their next action slated for Saturday night in the Hat. The Tigers host the Saskatoon Blades for a rematch of their 4-0 loss on Oct. 15.

Puck drops in Co-op Place at 7 p.m.
