The Medicine Hat College Rattlers had themselves a big weekend.
On Saturday, the men’s and women’s soccer teams took on Olds College in Medicine Hat. The Rattlers women’s team, led by Medicine Hat native Shelby Bach’s three goals, beat the Broncos 6-0. Emily Lafreniere also scored two and Maisa Rebello capitalized on one of two penalty in the win.
Rattlers goalkeeper Amanda Oevering stopped all 16 shots she faced. For head coach Miles Pinsent, he didn’t expect the big win but was happy with the result.
“I was really pleased, little surprised by the scoreline just when you look at the two teams records coming into the game,” Pinsent said. “So I anticipated it being a bit closer of a game than it was but we had a game plan for how we thought they were going to play and the girls executed it very well. So very pleased with the performance and the result.”
For Rebello, she’s happy with the win and how well the Rattlers have done this season.
“I don’t think I have words to measure, I’m really happy. We haven’t played for so long and we’re having really good results,” she said.
The men’s team also fared well against Olds, picking up its first win of the season Saturday. Goals by Ardit Zejnullahu and Aminja Abbe gave the Rattlers a 2-0 lead at the half. Pilani Siwela scored in the 51st minute to give the Rattlers a 3-0 lead, but the Lions capitalized on a penalty kick in the 60th minute to make it 3-1. Siwela then notched his second of the game, and Nashon Ranger-Reece closed out the scoring.
Both the women’s and men’s team traveled to SAIT on Sunday for a match against the Trojans.
The women lost a close match 3-2 with goals from Bach and Lefreniere. Oevering stopped 9 of the 12 shots she faced as her squad fell to 3-2 on the season.
The men’s team did not fare any better in a 2-0 loss to SAIT. Medicine Hat was held scoreless and shot-less in the match and now sit 2-3 on the season.
Both teams host Red Deer on Sunday for the final match of the regular season. The women’s game gets under way at 2 p.m. and the men’s at 4 p.m.
