The Hat High Hawks scored 44 unanswered en route to a 44-0 win over the Foothills Falcons Friday night.

Hat High’s football team remains perfect on the season as they extend their winning streak to 6-0 to pass the halfway point of the season. With five games left, head coach Quinn Skelton is happy with the undefeated record but won’t consider the Hawks running the gauntlet and going perfect on the season.

“That’s a little far ahead,” Skelton said. “We’ve got Raymond coming up on Thursday and we know we’ve got LCI to finish up with our exhibition league. The competition is going to be nothing but tough going in.”

Hat High capitalized early on three touchdowns from Tesema Veurink in the first quarter alone. It was a big night for the senior Hawk who had another TD in the second quarter for a total of four on the game. He figures it’s the most TDs he’s ever had in one game.

His fourth came off a throw from quarterback Brody Fink that bounced off of a Falcon defender’s helmet.

“That one was crazy,” Veurink said. “When Brody threw the ball it hit his helmet so I thought it was going to the side, but I just stood there and it just came into my hands.

Veurink sat the rest of the game after receiving a small cut on his neck in the second quarter. Skelton says Veurink was trying to get back in so much he had to hide his helmet.

The Hawks also had rushing touchdowns from Aayden Callan in the second quarter and from Colton Medwed in the third.

Skelton enjoyed the win for his team as he says the last time the Hawks faced Foothills they lost by a score of 55-11.

“Coming out tonight and the boys playing like they did, it feels good,” he said.

He says other than a couple of guys getting ‘dinged up,’ the night was all positives for the Hawks. He’s happy they were able to cycle in the younger guys in the second half to get them some playing time.

“As the second half played out we both got a lot of our young kids on the field. So a real positive there. Everybody’s going to go home happy they got some game time. Happy for the boys and a good win for us,” Skelton said.

Falcons coach Nathan St. Dennis said they have a young team and games like this against Hat High are a learning experience for his roster. St. Dennis says his team didn’t not play any football last season, which he acknowledges as something his team has to work with.

“We have 30 Grade 10s right now and they played a ton of football out there and it was great,” St. Dennis said. “It’s great playing a team like this that’s physical, they’ve got some great talent so it’s a measuring stick for what we need to be getting to.”

Hat High will travel next week to Raymond High school for a game on Thursday. For Skelton, he says his team will have to get started on their preparation come Monday.

“It’s a little shorter week, we’re gonna play on Thursday. So we come out, do some work with the film over the weekend and Raymond’s always a dynamic, athletic, hard-hitting group, and those kids play with a ton of pride. So, it’s gonna be switch on on Monday and see what we can do on Thursday,” Skelton said.
