The Medicine Hat Cubs and the HJHL have implemented the province’s COVID regulations.

The Heritage Junior Hockey League has adopted the Alberta government’s Restrictions Exemption Program league wide, effective yesterday.

This new program, means all spectators at any HJHL game aged 12 and over will be required to show proof of either a full COVID-19 vaccination, proof of a single dose administered a minimum of 14 days prior to the event (this option is only valid until Oct. 25) or a negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid test, from a paid private testing provider, taken within 72 hours of the event’s start time. Masks for all fans are required, as per AHS policy.

Medicine Hat president Troy Sandau issued the following statement on the COVID program.

“After a lengthy meeting between the HJHL Executive and all teams in the HJHL, they all have come to an agreement to proceed with the 2021/2022 by following the REP guidelines. After a near total shut down from last year we felt we owed it to our fans, players and community to advance with a season as safely as we can. Keeping in mind safety is first and foremost, we as a league knew we needed a season as a lot of teams depend on their gate revenue through the year.”

Cubs fans will go through the new program at their home opener on Sunday against the Sylvan Lake Wranglers at the Kinplex. Puck drops at 2:45 p.m.

Before the game, there will be a tailgate BBQ at the Carriage House starting at noon. The BBQ is free and will follow COVID REP guidelines. The Cubs are asking for a donation at the BBQ that will go towards Canadian Mental Health.
