Norris and Wenzel, Meyers duo win Hat Open doubles championships

Kristen Wenzel and Linda Norris rallied to a championship on Saturday evening at Medicine Hat Tennis Club.

Wenzel and Norris teamed up to defeat Lauren Danroth and Tracy Heller in the Medicine Hat Open women’s doubles final, quickly taking the first set 6-1 before hanging on to seal the victory with a 7-6 win in the second.

The title is Norris’s second in a row after winning with Heller last summer.

Brent and Richard Meyer won the men’s doubles title with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Mitch and Mason Heller in the final, while Sam Chekabab and Alex Stevens won the men’s intermediate bracket with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Messele and Mike Fentabil.

Rocheal and Marley Howes won the women’s consolation bracket, 4-3, 6-7, 6-1, over Lily Laurent and Carla Thorogood, while Darren and Mak Howes defeated Mark Thorogood and Jess Ferris, 6-4, 6-1, for the men’s consolation title. Cory and Isaac Streifel won the intermediate men’s consolation bracket with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gary Laurent and Rob Olson.

The Medicine Hat Open will conclude with the mixed doubles championship tournament, Sept. 9-11.
