Medicine Hat Little League’s Major AAA squad got a taste of the national stage on Wednesday at Lovell McDonnell Field.

The local squad welcomed Quebec’s Diamond Baseball Academy to the field for a doubleheader in part of a cross-country tour for the Boisbraind-based ball club.

Diamond picked up a 12-3 victory in the first game before running away with a second-half blowout, but that didn’t stop either team from enjoying every moment.

“Both teams had a great time, with a group picture at the end and cooling off in the outfield sprinklers,” coach Chad Nelson said in an email to the News.

Jayden Mook pitched a pair of innings to open Game 1, then Liam Cunningham, Asha Frey and Ethan Bowey entered to close things out with an inning apiece.

Cunningham, Frey and Ethan Chenard added key hits in the fifth inning to drive in Medicine Hat’s three runs.

Ryan Ziebart took the mound for two innings to start Game 2, then Dane Brooks, Dylan Nelson, Kane Bishop and Owen Fisher shared the relief work with an inning each.

Brooks, Frey and Cunningham helped start a fifth-inning rally to prevent a shutout with Medicine Hat’s lone run of the game.

Diamond Baseball Academy has made stops in Ottawa, Toronto, Regina and Medicine Hat, and will now move on to face teams in Lethbridge and Vancouver.
