Watson finishes fourth in opening heat at Olympic Games

Seven Persons sprinter Sage Watson opened her Olympic run with a fourth-place finish in the first heat of the women’s 400-metre hurdles on Saturday in Tokyo.

Watson finished with a time of 55.54 seconds – 0.03 ahead of Italy’s Yadisleidis Pedroso to qualify for Monday’s semifinals, which will take place at 5:35 a.m. MST.

Ukraine’s Viktoriya Tkachuk won the heat in 54.80, followed by Colombia’s Melissa Gonzalez with a national record 55.32.

Anna Cockrell, of the United States, edged Watson by 0.17 seconds to finish in 55.37.

The women’s 400-metre hurdles final is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Tokyo, or 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Medicine Hat.
