Medicine Hat Minor Softball Association announced its annual award winners Monday over social media, celebrating the achievements of the region’s young players in a particularly challenging season. Hannah Heidel and Gracie McNaughton took home Grade 12 player of the year honours, topping a list of nominees that included Brooke King, Kenny King and Maddy King. Heidel took up softball in 2015 and has since spent time coaching the U14 program as well as plenty of innings on the mound. Gracie McNaughton earned the MHMSA Thunder Sportsmanship and Character Award. Nominated alongside Camryn Burgevitz, Epic Zachery and Madison Perry, McNaughton was described as a constant source of encouragement to her teammates all season long in her award announcement. Catcher Josie Clark had her dedication rewarded as the U19 MVP, while Berlin Mastel pitched her way to the U16 MVP title. In U14 – composed of two teams – pitcher Albany Mastel took top MVP honours for her squad, while catcher Hayley Grad and pitcher Adriene Campbell split their award. Pitcher Reece Koblesky earned MVP honours for U12. Jayley Wandler took home most improved honours for the U19 squad. In U16, it was Kassidy Hart who earned the nod for most improved, while Eastynn Huber and Maia Petersen picked up the title for their respective U14 teams and Bella Fergusen had her efforts rewarded as the most improved U12 player. 6
