Dopp leads locals with back-to-back victories at drag strip this weekend

The Medicine Hat Drag Racing Association continued its season with another weekend of high-octane action at the local strip.

Medicine Hat’s Darian Dopp led a strong local showing with back-to-back victories in the Junior Street event, driving his 2006 Dodge Magnum to wins on Saturday and Sunday ahead of runner up Justus Schaan of Dunmore.

Dopp also settled for runner-up to High River’s Morgan Caron in Saturday’s Junior Lightning final.

Ashley Zeller defeated Dean Adie in an all-Hat Sportsman class final on Saturday, then Airdrie’s Ron Buzunis bested Medicine Hat’s Rony Vandenberg to win Sunday’s final.

Medicine Hat’s Tyler Zeller bested Chris Minhinnett, of Rockyview, to win Saturday’s Pro event before settling for runner-up to fellow Hatter Perry Bell Sunday.

In the Super Pro class, it was Brooke Burden who took Saturday’s victory ahead of fellow Hatter Rick Benko, then Redcliff’s Rick Wagenaar bested Vegreville’s Len Mayer to win Sunday’s event.

Hatter Zach Toth defeated father Dave Toth on Saturday to pick up the Pro Bike victory, but Dave bounced back to defeat Adam Hettler, of Calgary, in Sunday’s final.

Dave Toth also took the King of the Track victory Saturday by defeating Cypress County’s Darren Miller in the final, while Hettler picked up Friday night’s bike race victory by defeating Hatter Keith Easton.

Sherwood Park’s Jacob Mills won Saturday’s Junior Thunder final ahead of Hanna’s Jeff Orr, then Medicine Hat’s Kiandra Gaetz fell to Humbolt’s Daniel Layfield in Sunday’s final.

Humboldt’s Clara Layfield defeated Medicine Hat’s Tye Jones to win Sunday’s Junior Lightning final.

Racing returns to the strip Sept. 12 and 13 for the CMDRA Bike Drags weekend.
