The Medicine Hat under-16 Thunder split a pair of games in Olds this weekend to close out their summer fastball season.
After taking down the Olds Pistols 11-9, Medicine Hat dropped a 15-5 game to the Strathmore Thunder in a gruelling battle under the blazing sun.
“Despite matching Strathmore’s hit total, the Hatters couldn’t quite bring their base-runners home,” head coach Josh Hudson said in an email sent to the News. “Starting pitcher Kylee Waldegger allowed eight hits, four walks, four strikeouts, and six runs in four solid innings in 30-plus degree heat.”
At the dish it was Ryan Harvey-Zenk who did the heavy lifting with 2 RBI, a pair of runs and two stolen bases in a fitting 2-for-2 performance.
Berlin Mastel led the way in the earlier victory, both on the hill and at the plate. Mastel allowed just three hits and seven walks while fanning five over three innings on the mound, then drove in 5 RBI on an afternoon that included a triple and a home run.
“The players and coaches all had a blast, and are looking forward eagerly to a ‘normal’ 2021 season,” said Hudson.
