Aasman to coach Calgary Northstars

By Medicine Hat News on April 28, 2020.

Ryan Aasman is taking over a new bench in Calgary.

The 28-year-old Medicine Hat product has signed on as head coach of the Alberta Midget Hockey League’s Calgary Northstars, the team announced Saturday.

“Very excited and honoured,” Aasman said in a tweet.

Aasman played for five teams in the Western Hockey League over parts of five seasons, logging a goal and 11 assists in 166 games, spanning 2007-12. Aasman then stepped into a university career with the Lethbridge Pronghorns, and in 2017 – his final year at the school – he took an assistant coaching role with the Lethbridge Golden Hawks bantam AAA team.

After moving up to serve as an assistant with Lethbridge’s midget squad the following year, Aasman joined the bench of the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Grande Prairie Storm for the 2019-20 season. He was promoted to interim head coach in Grande Prairie partway through the campaign before signing on with the Northstars in the off-season.

“His experience as a player will relate well to our athletes, as these players will be aspiring to be what he was at their age,” Northstars general manager Jesse Hale said in a team release.

“The most attractive attributes that led to selecting Ryan are his focus on development with a players-first approach, his work ethic which will bleed into our players and team identity, as well as his attention to detail.”
