From the moment he stepped on the pitch it was obvious – the Medicine Hat College Rattlers had a good one in Abdou Raouf Mohamed.

The Italian soccer player was named Rattlers male rookie of the year Tuesday, topping a list of nominees that included volleyball’s Aleksa Zivic and basketball’s David Kent-Canalejo.

Mohamed finished third in scoring among the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference South Division with 11, earning an all-star spot. Last week he was among six Rattlers to earn academic all-Canadian status, meaning he’s also got a grade-point average above 3.50.

Though his team didn’t make the playoffs with a 5-5-2 record, they definitely set themselves up for a strong future with Mohamed an offensive powerhouse.
