Rattlers name six Academic All-Canadians

By Medicine Hat News on April 18, 2020.

Combining on and off-court excellence, a half-dozen Medicine Hat College student-athletes were announced as Academic All-Canadians by the Rattlers in conjunction with the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Friday.

All six recipients had to meet the criteria of a 3.5 grade point average and all-star status in their respective conference sport.

A pair of outgoing fifth-year women’s players were on the list, having finished their playing careers on home court at conference championships. Shaya Suchy, the all-time conference digs leader in volleyball, and Morgan Muir, the dominant leader of the basketball team, will both be honoured again Saturday when the Rattlers honour their fifth-year players as part of their ongoing virtual awards banquet.

From men’s basketball, Kieron Burgess was the go-to player averaging a double-double for the second season in a row. But it was his academic aptitude that kept him in line for the CCAA recognition.

In soccer, women’s player Jadyn Fode and men’s player Abdou Raouf Mohamed each starred on the pitch and in the classroom. And in golf, rookie Caleb Kinch helped his team to a conference title and wound up holding his own when it came to academics as well.

Rattlers awards began April 6 and wrap up April 23.
