Zones start at McCoy tonight

By Medicine Hat News on March 12, 2020.

The South Zone 3A basketball championships begin at Monsignor McCoy tonight with two games on the bill.

Crescent Heights’ girls begin with a quarter-final against Winston Churchill out of Lethbridge at 6 p.m. The winner will go on to face the host Colts Friday at 1 p.m., with the winner of that game earning one of the zone’s two spots to provincials.

At 8 p.m. tonight, Crescent Heights’ boys face Eagle Butte in a similar scenario. That winner also moves on to a Friday semifinal against McCoy, a 5 p.m. tipoff. Again, the boys’ zone has two berths into provincials so the semifinal winners clinch a spot.

McCoy’s girls are seeded second in the province while their boys are ranked first.

The other side of both draws has just a semifinal. W.R. Myers’ girls will face Eagle Butte in a Friday, 3 p.m. game with the winner off to both provincials and Saturday’s 2 p.m. final. Stirling and W.R. Myers’ boys play at 7 p.m. The boys final is 4 p.m. Saturday.

Mohawks advance

Hat High’s boys beat Chinook 110-87 on home court Tuesday, advancing to a 4A zone semifinal tonight in Lethbridge.

The Mohawks will face Cardston with a provincial berth on the line at 9 p.m., though whoever loses can still earn one of the four spots up for grabs, though they’d need to win a Friday consolation game to get in.

Hat High’s girls will face the loser of today’s semifinal between LCI and Magrath on Friday to determine whether they head to provincials. They were beat by Cardston at home Tuesday.

In junior varsity playoffs, Hat High’s unbeaten girls beat Cardston 89-47 Wednesday night and face LCI in Saturday’s final. The Mohawks junior team lost 89-80 to Magrath in a quarter-final Monday which ended their season.
