The Briercrest Clippers held on to become Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference women’s volleyball champions on Saturday night at the Snake Pit. After punching their ticket to nationals with a three-set win over King’s University Friday, the Clippers took home the title of champions by defeating the Red Deer Queens in a five-set battle (21-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12). Rebecca Garner powered the Clippers to the title with a 31-kill performance. Ashley Erickson assisted on 62 and Kirsty Kindrachuck dug out 17. Tess Pearman led the Queens with 18 kills, while Emma Letkeman had 39 assists and Kaylee Domoney added 26 digs. The King’s University Eagles took bronze with a four-set win over the University of Alberta’s Augstana Vikings (25-19, 25-23, 17-25, 26-24) earlier Saturday. The Ambrose Lions kicked off the final day of the championship with a five-set comeback against the Lakeland Rustlers (22-25, 11-25, 25-12, 25-15, 15-5) to take fifth. The Medicine Hat Rattlers fell short of Saturday’s action after losing in five to Lakeland in a placement game Friday. Over in Lethbridge, the Red Deer Kings defeated the host Kodiaks in four sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23) to clinch the men’s volleyball championship. The SAIT Trojans topped Briercrest in five (22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-12) earlier Saturday to claim bronze. 8
