The teams in green are going purple for one night in memory of a local woman. Hat High’s boys and girls basketball teams host Magrath today and the Mohawks and Kwahommies will wear special Karen’s Purple Shirt Party garb for Karen Wagenaar, who died three years ago after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Wagenaar’s family supported Hat High basketball and began the Purple Shirt Party which encourages everyone to wear purple one day of the year. That day is June 13 but the shirts will be on sale today for $15 apiece. Numerous members of the Mohawks and Kwahommies have rekindled the popular ALS ice bucket challenge this week, and the hope is plenty more proceeds can be raised in addition to awareness of a disease that still has no cure and is fatal. Games start at 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m. with the varsity teams finishing off the night. All four Hat teams are above .500, led by the junior girls at a remarkable 9-0. Both varsity games should be nailbiters as Magrath and Hat High have virtually identical records. 6
