Shots don’t fall down stretch for the Rattlers

By Medicine Hat News on February 1, 2020.

The Medicine Hat College women’s basketball team had the kind of showing they’d like to forget Friday.

At Red Deer, the Rattlers couldn’t buy a bucket in the second half, losing 65-39 to the Queens thanks in part to a woeful shooting effort.

Trailing 30-26 at the break, Medicine Hat only managed four field goals over the final 20 minutes, missing 28 attempts.

Amy Szymanek had 14 points off the bench for the host side, including eight in the tide-turning third quarter. Britney Peters added 12 as Red Deer improved to 7-7, still in the thick of the playoff hunt.

Katelyn Rozdeba had 12 and Rhiannon Ware 11 for the Rattlers, now 8-7 and fourth in their division. They host conference finals in March but naturally prefer not to need to the automatic bid.

On a positive note, captain Morgan Muir did play after missing the last two games. The fifth-year guard had eight points.

The teams meet again in Red Deer Saturday.

Men’s basketball

The men’s team fought hard, but was mathematically eliminated from post-season contention Friday with a 80-72 loss to the Kings.

Tyronn King had 17 points for Red Deer, which found itself tied up until the final few minutes of the game. Now 7-7, they’re in a three-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division.

Kieron Burgess led Medicine Hat with 17 points and 14 rebounds, but the Rattlers fell to 2-13. With five games remaining they’re 10 points back of fourth; two of the fourth-place teams will yet play each other guaranteeing two more points for one of them.
