It’s a slow time of year for swim meets, but the Medicine Hat Waves started the new year right with some fast finishes this past weekend.

In Calgary for the Pugsley’s Plunge Invitational, 16 Waves athletes combined for 22 medals and 47 personal bests in the pool.

Leading the way were 11-year-old Rowynn Biffart and 12-year-old Johnathan Marshall. Biffart emerged with five medals – first in her 50 metre freestyle, 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley, then second in 50 breaststroke and 800 freestyle. Marshall did one better with six – first in his 50 metre backstroke, 50 and 100 freestyle, then second in 50 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, then finally third in 100 breast.

Jaivyn Barabe tallied four medals, including a win in the 14-year-old girls’ 50 metre breaststroke, second in the 100 breast and 50 fly, and third in the 50 free.

Kage Senft had a trio of medals, first in 100 freestyle for 11-year-old boys, then third in both his 50 and 100 metre butterfly. His older brother Karsten had silver in the 200 freestyle and bronze in the 100 freestyle for the 14- and 15-year-old age group.

Other medallists were Grace Jacobs (second, 200 backstroke) and William Millner (third, 200 backstroke).

Some of the Waves are in Cochrane this weekend for a meet but otherwise they’re hard at work training until the provincials in March.
