Rhett Lewis of the Cardston Cougars brings the ball up the floor while Elijah Buachie Kaba of the Medicine Hat Mohawks keeps an eye on him in the consolation game of the 53rd annual Sugar Bowl Saturday afternoon at Raymond High School.

A pair of local high school basketball teams stayed busy during the holiday break.

Hat High’s boys and Monsignor McCoy’s girls each travelled to tournaments, though the Colts went quite a bit further than the Mohawks.

At Raymond, Hat High went 2-1 at the annual Sugar Bowl tournament, closing with a 102-86 consolation final win over Cardston Saturday.

They lost 84-68 to LCI in the opening round, but rebounded with an 87-52 win over Cochrane Saturday morning.

The Mohawks are back in league play next Tuesday in Raymond.

McCoy was in Phoenix, Ariz. for the Cactus Jam tournament, which the team has attended numerous times in the past.

This year the girls went 1-2. They defeated a team from Alaska 59-31 Friday. On Saturday they fell 77-30 to the eventual division champions from Port Coquitlam, B.C. And Monday they lost 58-34 to a team from Ohio.

Like the Mohawks, the Colts resume league play next week, with a Jan. 8 home game against Crescent Heights.
